John Alexander Bennie and Eleanor “Ellen” Carswell Brother to James, younger brother John Alexander Bennie (1788-1865) and Eleanor “Ellen” Carswell (1790-1834) came to Westmeath Township sometime in the 1840s. The Crown was enticing new homesteaders. Eleanor or Ellen was the daughter of Robert Carswell and Helen Russell who were also Scottish immigrants. Both John A. and Eleanor had arrived into Canada at from Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland with their extended families. After marrying in Bathurst District in 1834, the young couple had first lived in Ramsey Township of Lanark County. 1834 John & Helen Marriage. John A. was described as a scribe and teacher.
