About John Macpherson Berrien, Jr.
"As second lieutenant in the Oglethorpe Light Infantry (Company B, 8th Regiment Georgia Infantry) and aide-de=camp to Captain Bartow, he accompanied his brother-in-law to Veirginia in May 1861; when Bartow was killed at Manassas on July 21st, 1861, Berrien returned to Savannah with Bartow's body for burial ... In September 1862, as captain in the regular army, he was appointed tot he staff ofGeneral thomas R.R. Cobb; at Fredericksburg, on December 13th, 1862, Cobb was killed and Berrien was desperately wounded in the right hip. Although he recovered sufficiently to resume military service, he remained a cripple for life. After the war he returned to Savannah, where he was paoointed justice of teh peace by the governor.
