About John Halbert Berry

John was working as a clerk in 1885 when he married Adelquia Eliza Ebbeke. The family then lived at 23 John's Lane, Kingston, Jamaica - the home of Adelquia at the time of her marriage. He was still working as a clerk in 1887 at the time of the birth of his son Harold and still living at 23 John's Lane, Kingston.

John Berry served on an Elector's Committee in 1887.

John became a shoemaker. In October, 1889 this advert was placed in the Gleaner newspaper:

'HAVING purchased the stock in trade of the Rae Town Tannery Depot (18 Church Street) and removed the same into my store, and having made arrangments for the future supply of all Leather Manufactured at the Rae Town Tannery, I beg to notify to my friends and customers that all orders entrusted to me from town or country shall have my prompt and best attention. My retail trade of Creole Sole and Harbour leather, Bazillia, Brown Calfakins, Goatkins, &c., will be conducted on the principal of small profits and quick returns. Civility guaranteed, and prompt attention.

117, Water Lane'

The 1891 Kingston Directory listed John. H. Berry as a 'boot and shoemaker etc.' and he was stated as operating a business known as the 'Rae Town Tannery Depot' at 117 Water Lane, Kingston. There were 2 other leather-related businesses also operating at 117 Water Lane - a shoemaker and a saddle and harness maker.

In 1892, at the birth of Hazel, John and Adelquia were living at 28 Duke Street, Kingston.

There was an advertisement for sale of a premises in Orange Street, Kingston in October, 1892, possibly number 48 (unreadable) which was stated as being mortgaged by John H. Berry.

In August,1896, it was reported that John H. Berry, shoemaker, had served as a juror in the Kingston Court.

On March the 11th, 1909, a Registration of Title was published in the Gleaner newspaper, dated March 4th, 1909, regarding the property known as 124 Princess Street, Kingston. The person registering the title was stated as 'John Halbert Berry of 124 Princess Street, in Kingston. Application 3930.' The property measurements were 'from East to West, 90 feet and from North to South, 25 feet'.

John's wife Adelquia had died at some point before 1914 as John had married a lady with the surname Salmon by then. In 1915 he was still living at 124 Princess Street - a house with a small shoemaker's shop - John's former home at the time of his first marriage.

In July, 1915, he gave away his daughter Hazel in marriage to Samuel West, the headmaster of Allman Town School, Kingston.

On the 19th of August, 1915, a Registration of Title was published in the Gleaner newspaper, in regard to the property known as 28 Duke Street, Kingston, formerly known as 26 and a half Duke Street, Kingston. The persons registering the title were stated as 'John Halbert Berry of the city and parish of Kingston, shoemaker and Hazel Berry of Kingston, aforesaid, spinster. Application no. 6548.'

Hazel was shown as a spinster but had recently married. Obviously, the registration of title paperwork had been prepared before the event.

In 1920 an advertisement was placed in the Daily Gleaner newspaper to sell 124 Princess Street - ' TO SELL: 124 Princess Street, Kingston, dwelling house and shop. Good business stand cheap. Apply on premises.'
