Homesite is Blevins Plantation: Colonel John Wilson Blevins, Esquire (Justice of the Peace) (Title Colonel evidently acquired as a landowner and gentleman of prominence in the area as his military rank was that of second Lt.) and his wife, Elizabeth, established their home, The Blevins Plantation, near the present townsite of Decatur, which was then a portion of McMinn county TN. (Formation of Meigs co in 1836 included Decatur and immediate vicinity) The first of their nine children, all born on the plantation, Ruth Jane Vance Blevins was born 22 Sep 1831, followed by Mary Ann on 12 Apr 1833, Sarah M on 21 Mar 1835 and James Duke 29 Dec 1836
10 Jul 1837 John Wilson Blevins enlisted as 2nd Lt. in the 1st Reg. 2nd Brigate TN Mtd Vol for service in the Indian wars. During his 12 month tour of duty, he was stationed at Fort Cass (across Hiwassee River from Calhoun TN), at Fort Wood and Fort Poinsett in Florida. Pension claim of widow affords this additional information.
