About John Bolling, Sr.

John Bolling, Sr., was the son of William Bolling of Orange, VA and wife Ann Sims. He was born in Orange County, Virginia about 1736 and died in Clarke County, Georgia in about 1812. He married the widow Ursula Wisdom before 1762. They had eleven children.

Ursula was the daughter of Roger Bell and wife Elizabeth. Her first husband was Francis Wisdom, who died on December 6, 1758 in Orange County, Virginia. She had three daughters by her first marriage.

John was a farmer. He supplied food to the American troops during the Revolutionary War. There survives today a court proceedings where he was promised 2-1/2 cents per pound for the 225 pounds of beef that was impressed for the troops. He signed a petition dated October 20 1779, requesting that soldiers not currently in battle be allowed home on furlough to help with planting.

As the eldest son, John was made the executor of his father's estate in April, 1772 - Orange County, VA. Order Book 8, page 175: At a court held April 23, 1772, John Bowling granted administration of Estate of William Bowling, deceased, whereupon he with Samuel Brockman, Jr., John Atkins and Conyers White, his security, entered into and acknowledged their bond for the same in the sum of #500.

John Bolling was listed regularly on the tax rolls and tithables list for Orange County, Virginia, until about 1794. In that year, a deed was recorded for John and "Ursiller" Bowling, selling land to James Perry of Spotsylvania, Virginia. At some point after this sale, John and his family moved to Big Creek, Oglethorpe, Georgia. He appears on the Oglethorpe County tax roles from 1807 to 1811. He died in 1812 in Georgia. Family lore has the place of death as Clarke County, just one county over from Oglethorpe.
