About John Johnson Booth

From the booth family "The Booth family imigrated from England and are of Irish heritage. John J. Booth was born in Long Branch, New York 1829. At some time his family moved to Virginia. In 1848, John J Booth married Margaret J Russell in the state of Virginia. John and Margaret had given birth to four children in Virginia. One of his sons, Otis Booth is a direct descendant. Otis Booth was born April 18, 1857 and had sired twelve children."

From The Russell Family Heritage: "John B Russell was born in Maryland on January 25, 1811. He would have married about 1831. He married Sarah (Sallie) McKown. They had nine children. One of their children being Margaret Russell, wife of John J. Booth and mother of Otis Booth.

(This information was provided by Sharon Simpson Collinson how the 2 families ended up in MO..) Both the Booth and Russell families migrated to Ray Co. Missouri about 1855. The original plans were to homestead in Nebraska. After they boarded a steamboat at St Louis to travel up the river, several members came down with cholera which was epidemic at that time. Two of the Russell children died and the families were set down in Ray County, MO to bury the children. The boat left without them and that is where the two families settled. Both families settled down to farming.

John Russell owned 500 acres and had slaves. He fought for the South in the Civil War. John Booth fought for the North ( PVT CO D 6 REG MO ST MIL CAV)" Kathy, According to the census from 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880,John J. Booth was born in Virginia. He married Margaret Jane Russell in Virginia on March 29, 1849 before they left to go by boat to Ray County, MO. They were living there until his death as far as I can determine. His civil war draft registration also gives his state of birth as VA. He was in the Union as a private from September 1863 until he mustered out (not sure when that was though). He was in the 6th Regiment, Missouri State Militia Cavalry, Company D. This is from Film M390 roll 5 in the National Archives. I got all of this information + more from Ancestry so if you or someone you know uses it, just type in the things you know about him and you can print out a copy of his draft registration when you locate it. (It is available through Ancestry.)
