  • 15th – George Buchanan,[76][77] (Guthrie Smith identifies him as 10th Chief and Buchanan of Auchmar identifies him as 17th Chief) succeed his grandfather, Walter 14th of Buchanan, in 1526 and died 1560. He first married Margaret Edmonstone and by her a son (John [Guthrie Smith identifies him as 11th Chief but then goes on to advise that the Chiefship passed from John’s father to John’s son[78] and Buchanan of Auchmar identifies him as 18th Chief[79 who married Elizabeth Livingston and by her had George [79] who succeeded his grandfather) and two daughters (Helen and Susanna). Second he married Janet Cunningham and by her had a son (William first ancestor of the cadets of Auchmar) and a daughter (Margaret).
  • 16th – Sir George Buchanan,[78][79] (Guthrie Smith identifies him as 12th Chief and Buchanan of Auchmar identifies him as 19th Chief) succeed his grandfather, George 15th of Buchanan, in 1561, married Lady Mary Graham and by her one son (John his successor) and two daughters (Helen and Susanna).

He married Lady Mary Graham, daughter of John, Earl of Menteith, and had John and two daughters, (1) Helen, who married Alexander Colquhoun of Luss, and (2) Susanna, who married John Macfarlane of that Ilk.

This Sir John Buchanan "was," says Auchmar, "accounted the worst, if not the "only bad one of all the Lairds of Buchanan;" and by his frequent travels into foreign nations and other extravagances had involved his estate in such an immense debt that his grandson at first found it inconvenient to enter as heir.

  • XII. GEORGE BUCHANAN of Buchanan succeeded his grandfather in 1561. On 27th March 1561 George Buchanan was retoured heir of George Buchanan his grandfather in the lands of Buchanan, Auchmar, and Sallochy, with the islands of Clairinch and Kepinch, and also the bell and alms of St. Kessog.6 He married Lady Mary Graham, daughter of John, Earl of Menteith;7 and had issue: (1) John; and two daughters: (1) Helen, who married Alexander Colquhoun of Luss (marriage contract dated 18th August 1595);8 and (2) Susanna, who was the first wife of John Macfarlane of that Ilk, by whom she had no children.9

On 26th October 1602 he is retoured heir of his father Sir George Buchanan in Buchanan, and other lands, and in the same year he had a thirty-eight years' tack of the whole teinds of Kilmaronock from his father-in-law, Adam, Commendator of Cambuskenneth, to him and his wife Annabel Erskine. By Annabel Erskine he had at least two sons: (1) George; and (2) Walter, who was at Glasgow College 7th March 1620.1
  • XIV. GEORGE BUCHANAN of Buchanan married Elizabeth Preston, only daughter of Sir George Preston of Craigmillar, Knt. He had an infeftment as heir-apparent of his father. Sir John Buchanan, in the estate of Buchanan, to him and his wife, Elizabeth Preston, 10th July 1629. He and his father were dead before 1653. He left issue: one son John, and three daughters: (1) Helen, who became second wife of Sir John Rollo of Bannockburn;2 (2) Agnes, who married James Stewart of Rosyth3 (marriage contract dated 7th July 1649);4 and (3) Jean or Janet,5 who married, 5th December 1661, John Leckie of that Ilk.6
