It is widely reported that John Burnside was the son of Robert Burnside (died 1742, VA) and Esther Mayse (both of Ireland) [Esther later married Archibald Clendennin, Sr.] Robert and Esther Burnside's children were stated to be born in Virginia. However, in at least two instances the records prove otherwise. Martha Burnside Jordan, John's youngest child, lived long enough to be enumerated in the 1880 census which asked about parents' birth countries and Martha stated "Ireland" as her father's birth country. Secondly, John is reported to have been of "foreign birth" in his son, Alexander Burnside's, death record in 1875. This is an issue that deserves much more investigation to document John's biological parents. The birth date listed is an estimate.
