By list as found it appears all his descendants  dropped  the "van' off the surname and used only "Buskirk'

(Mary Littell & Jerusha Littell, sisters, married John Buskirk & Isaac Van Buskirk, brothers. The Van was omitted from John’s revolutionary war papers and his descendants consistently followed suit. The family of Mary and John Buskirk is set forth in Chapter 9, Littell Families History & Genealogy, however, at the time the manuscript was submitted to the publisher nothing, other than the name, was known of their third child, Josiah Buskirk, page 729
