Dr. John Lawton Capps, 53, of Gastonia, died Monday, March 11, 2013 at his home. He was born May 14, 1959 in Warrenton, NC, a son of the late Amos Lee and Rebecca Davis Capps.

John was a graduate of Warren Academy High School, received his bachelors degree from Wake Forest University, and earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine. He served the Gaston County community for over 20 years in the practice of Internal Medicine, and more recently in Bariatric medicine in Rock Hill, SC. John served on the board of Gaston County Department of Social Services and on the board of House of Mercy in Belmont. John was a loving husband, father, friend, cancer survivor, artist, and cartoonist, who was always willing to help those in need.

Survivors of Dr. Capps include his daughter, Samantha Lynn Capps of Belmont; son, Stewart Bailey Capps; partner, James Collins; mother of his children, Karen Lee Kickham, all of Gastonia; siblings and spouses, Weldon Clinton and Betty Jean Capps; Sylvia Capps Greene; all of Arcola, NC; Lester Davis and Elke Capps of Warrenton, NC; Amos Lee Capps, Jr. of Arcola; Robin Wesley and Frances Capps of Warrenton; and Lynn Capps Martin and Michael of Arcola; numerous nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate the life of Dr. Capps will be held 6:00pm, Thursday, March 14, 2013 in Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia, with Stan Patterson officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Dr. Capps will then be taken back to his childhood home for a funeral service to be held 2:30pm, Saturday, March 16, 2013 at Bethlehem Methodist Church in Arcola, NC. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery.
