From page 522 of Genealogical and Personal History of the Allegheny Valley ..., Volume 2 By John Woolf Jordan (Note the author makes some erroneous statement about the relationships of the Chadwicks for which there is no evidence):

The Chadwick family is one CHADWICK of the most ancient of English families having an ancestry that in its principal line dates back a thousand years. The first record of the family.

in America is of Charles and John Chadwick (supposed to have been brothers), who came in 1630, probably in Governor Winthrop's fleet. There were Chadwicks at an early day in New Jersey, where Samuel Chadwick is mentioned as taking the oath of allegiance in 1668. The name was often pronounced Shaddock and sometimes written that way by Chadwicks. William, Thomas and John were favorite names in the family and are found as far back as the Conquest. Charles Chadwick who came in 1630 became an influential citizen of Watertown, Massachusetts.

(II) John Chadwick, parentage unknown, was born in Watertown, Massachusetts; Savage says: "He was probably a nephew of Charles Chadwick of Watertown." He had by wife Sarah, eight children, who are mentioned in his will made January 31, probated March 15, 1711; among them was a son, John.
