About John P Clowry

John Clowry died 4th May, 1904. Nationalist and Leinster Times. 7th May 1904. DEATH OF MR. JOHN P. CLOWRY, TULLOW STREET, CARLOW. It is with sincere regret that we record the death of Mr. John P. Clowry, one of Carlow's best known and most popular townsmen. The sad event took place on Wednesday, after a very brief illness. Mr Clowry had a serious attack of illness during the winter, but of late he seemed to be regaining his usual robust health. On Friday week he attended the meeting of the School Attendance Committee, of which body he was an officer. It was then noticed that he was not looking well, and he was advised to go home and rest. On Saturday he was able to be about, but on the following day he became seriously ill. Dr F.P. Colgan, his medical attendant, recognised the dangerous condition of the patient and applied the most approved remedies but without avail. The cause of death is ascribed to effusion of blood to the brain. We have said that Mr Clowry was one of the most popular men in Carlow, and it can also be truthfully stated that in life he was a model of the Christian man. For many years he was Vice-President of the local branch of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and in that capacity he spared no pains to bring relief and succour to the distressed. He was also Secretary to the Sacred Heart Sodality, and as such gave much assistance to the Rev. Directors in maintaining that admirable religious organisation. Indeed where work was to be done for Faith or Fatherland John Clowry was ever to be found, ready to undertake a man's part. For many years he filled the responsible position of Borough Rate Collector, and with utmost credit. The greatest sympathy is felt with Mr Clowry's bereaved widow and daughter in the great affliction which has befallen them.
