John is the son of Deacon Joseph Coit 1639-1701 and his wife Martha Harris 1646-1710. He is the grandson of the Immigrant John Coite, Welsh shipbuilder, and his wife Mary Jenners who arrived in Salem around 1632. John and Mehetabel had 4 sons and 2 daughters.
John Coit maintained a shipyard and a shipping trade with the West Indies and Europe. He inherited his father's shipbuilding business and moved it to Point of Rocks in 1699, building a new dock in 1729. Now Bank St. per Mehetabel Chandler Coit's writings.]
