About John Crow, of Hartford

Biographical Summary:

John Crow was born in 1606; came to New England in 1634. He became possessed, by vote of the town, of the original right of Bartholomew Greene, forfeited by death. He married Elizabeth, only child of Elder William Goodwin. Chosen surveyor of highways, 1656. He was one of the first settlers on the east side of the river, and the largest landholder in Hartford. "He owned a tract of land [in East Hartford] extending from near the present Hockanum bridge, north to the neighborhood of 'Smith's Lane,' and running eastward to the end of the three-mile lots. (Bolton.) Crow Hill in the river swamp still retains his name." He went with his father-in-law to Hadley in 1659; freeman, Massachusetts, 1666; he returned to Hartford about 1675, and he and his wife were admitted to the South Church, March 31, 1678; died Jan. 16,1686.


i. Esther, born 1628; married 1655, Giles Hamlin, Esq, of Middletown; died August 25, 1700, aged 72.

ii. John, lived in Fail-field; was a merchant in the West India trade; died at sea, 1667, without children.

iii. Mary, married (1) December 27, 1666, Noah Coloman, of Hatfield; (2) September 16, 1680, Peter Montague, of Hadley; she died October 12, 1720.

iv. Nathaniel, lived in East Hartford; married Deborah ____; died July 30, 1695; his widow married Andrew Warner, of Hartford, afterward of Windham.

v. Elizabeth, born 1644; married (1) William Warren, of Hartford; (2) Phineas Wilson, of Hartford, a wealthy merchant from Dublin; he died May 22, 1692, and after his death she continued his business, and became the most extensive banker in the Colony. She was accustomed to loan money on mortgage not only to citizens of Hartford, but in the adjacent towns, and she managed her affairs with wisdom and judgment. She died July 9 or 19, 1727, aged 86 (?), leaving a large property and many legacies,

vi. Sarah, born March I, 1646-7, in Hartford; married November 1, 1661, Daniel White, of Hatfield; died June 29, 1719, aged 72.

vii. Anne, or Hannah, born July 13, 1649; married March 7, 1667-8, Thomas Dickinson; he was one of the first settlers of Hadley, but removed to Wethersfield in 1679; died there, 1716.

viii. Mehitabel, born about 1652; married September 24, 1668, Colonel Samuel Partridge, of Hadley and Hatfield; died December 8, 1730, aged 78.

ix. Ruth, married (1) December 21, 1671, William Gaylord, of Hadley; (2) about 1681, John Haley, of Hadley.

x. Samuel, married May 17, 1671, Hannah, daughter of Capt. William Lewis, of Farmington; slain at Fall's fight, May 18, 1676.

xi. Daniel, born about 1656; lived in Hartford; died August 12, 1693, aged 37, without children.

To New England by 1635, possibly aboard the 'Lion,' settling at Hartford, CT, then Hadley, MA where he was freeman 1666. He returned to Hartford by 1676. Married second about 1640, probably at Hartford, CT. No information on his first marriage is available.

John Crow was born in 1606, England; died Jajuary 16, 1686, Hartford, CT. He was the son of John Crow.

His name appears on Hartford's Founders Monument.

He sailed to New England by 1635, possibly aboard the 'Lion,' settling at Hartford, CT, then Hadley, MA where he was freeman 1666. He returned to Hartford by 1676. He married Elizabeth Goodwin as his second wife about 1640, probably at Hartford, CT. There is no information available on his first marriage.

Came to New England in 1635, was an early settler of Hartford, and one of the first settlers of Hadley, freeman 1666. He returned as early as 1676 to Hartford.
