About John Henry Dalzell

In 1861 John Dalzell emigrated to New Zealand and is thought to have worked on the Lyttelton tunnel. John later left for Gabriel’s Gully in the Otago gold diggings, and made enough money to “nominate” some other members of his family to the South Island. James Dalzell, a twin of John, arrived at Lyttelton in 1863. On this voyage also, was a James Dalziel from Scotland, his wife and three children, so no wonder there is confusion in later years! Shortly after James’ arrival, John Dalzell purchased land at Glasnevin, and by the end of 1865, James had also purchased in that same area. Being the stubborn old man that he was, when his arm became poisoned he refused to have it amputated and died as a consequence.
