About John Dent-Young

Educated at Mount St. Mary's College, Chesterfield, and became a pupil at his father's civil engineering office for three years before being employed in 1910 by Messrs Fore and Bateman of Westminster on the Penderyn resevoir project in South Wales.

1911-192 Bath Corporation as a civil engineer.

He began his mining career on joining Northern Nigeria (Bauchi) Tim Mines Ltd. in April 1912, surveyor.

John Dent-Young was fighting in the Cameroons (East Africa with the 1st Btln. Queen's Own Nigeria Regiment) during WW1.

He was wounded in the thigh, and shipped to South Africa via Mombasa to recover. According to David Dent-Young (her Son), he met and married Olivette who was a nurse.

(David has letters written by his father during the Cameroon campaign.)

On demob he was appointed manager to Gurum River Tim Mines Ltd.

In 1935 be become MD of Nigerian Alluvials Ktd.

Whilst in Nok his miners found the first example of Nok Culture (

He retired in 1950 and returned to England.
