About John Devine SV/PROG
John Devine was in The Royal Victoria Asylum, Chiswick Mall, which was run by the Children’s Friend Society where destitute girls and boys were trained to be Servants before being sent to the Colonies “to give these children the chance of a better life”. John was 16 when they left London on the 'Henry' arriving in Cape Town on 22nd March 1836.
He was apprenticed to 1) Dr H.A. Montgomery, Paarl, surgeon, as a house servant. 2) William Proctor, Malmesbury.
