About John B Downing, IV

Per Emmet Starr's History of the Cherokee Indians, 1921, John was the second son of Major Downing but the order is unconfirmed. In findagrave.com, memorial #26803328 (Maj John B Downing), Darlene Johnson had years of birth for the four siblings making John the third child of the Major. In poncy-mclean.net, the lineage is such that John's father was "the third" which would make this John "the fourth" but that is not listed anywhere I have found.

This John Downing married a Jennie (Fields?) and a Nannie. He had 17 children including: Ollie, Samuel, David, Isaac, Peggy, Nelli, Moses, Elizabeth, Celia, Jesse, Charolotte, William, Cynthia, James, CATHERINE, Sallie and John. [Note about this last John: According to poncy-mclean.net, this John Downing's grandfather was John "the third"; that would make this John's father John "the fourth" making THIS John "the fifth" but I haven't found any signs that these designations were used past the third.]

It is possible that he adopted or raised some of his brother's (William's) children...reference: CATHERINE Downing MAY BE the KATIE/Wa-ke Downing who married Tickaneesky Still/Ketcher on the other branch of this family tree. In Emmet Starr's history of the Cherokee Indians (1921, reprint 2009), there are NO entries for William, nor any indication that he was without wife or "issue"; Wm is just "skipped". My research leads up Katie's tree to William Downing who married an Alice. Are CATHERINE and KATIE the same person? In several resources, this Katie/Catherine is listed as the child of John Downing but in actual family, Cherokee applications, it is stated that Katie's father's name was William.

According to Archieves.com, LeeJamison Tree, John was born in 1742 in Cherokee, GA, and died Oct. 14, 1793 in Northumberland, VA. His first wife was Jennie FIELDS who was born in 1756, Cherokee, GA, and died in 1851.
