About John Eaton, Sr., of Salisbury & Haverhill debunking Anne's last name being Crossman

John Eaton, Sen., of Salisbury & Haverhill "cooper." Moved to Haverhill in 1646. Son of Thomas and Helen of Beausall in the parish of Hatton, Warwickshire,(Thomas, Thomas, John)

He was christened on 26 December 1590 in Hatton, Warwickshire, England. He is *not* the John East who married Ann Crossman and obtained a marriage license on 26 December 1621 at Great Paull's Wharf, London, Middlesex, England. That is a long way from his home and his name is common. Genealogists do not accept this. His first wife Ann's maiden name is unknown. Anne died at Haverhill 5 February 1660/61. He married secondly, 20 November 1661 at Haverhill, Phebe (unknown) Dow, widow of Thomas Dow of Haverhill. She died about March 1673 and administration on her estate was granted in April following. John Eaton Died at Haverhill 29 October 1668. He was a cooper as well as a farmer.

Merge Caution: There were several John Eaton's in early colonial Massachusetts; care must be taken to distinguish them. This John Eaton is usually referred to as John Eaton of Haverhill. Specifically, he is not the same as John Eaton of Dedham who arrived in 1635, settled at Watertown and then moved to Dedham, where he spent the rest of his life. That John Eaton came from Dover, married Abigail Bachelor, widow Damon, and had children Mary, John, Thomas, John, Abigail and Jacob. He is also not the same as John Eaton of Reading (son of William Eaton of Reading). He is also not the same as John Eaton of Reading (son of Jonas Eaton of Reading).

JOHN AND ANNE EATON settled in Salisbury, Mass., prior to the winter of 1639, when his name first appears on the Proprietor’s Books. There were several grants of real estate made by the “Freeman of Salisbury unto John Eaton1 from 1640-46.” On one of these “containing pr estimation six acres lying upon ye great neck” it is supposed that he lived. The homestead has never passed out of the Eaton Family, and is now known as “Brookside Farm.” In the year 1646 he moved to Haverhill, Mass., where the last twenty-two years of his life were spent. His first wife Anne, died in 1660, and he married Phoebe Dow, Widow of Thomas Dow of Newbury, the following year. He died in Haverhill, Oct. 29th, 1668, aged seventy-three years.
