J. Alvin Edenton, 83, of Fredericksburg died Monday, May 25, 2009 at the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Nursing Home in Richmond.
Mr. Edenton was a life long resident of Spotsylvania County. He served in WWII as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division "The Screaming Eagles". Alvin served in Germany, France and Belgium. He was wounded at the Battle of Bastogne in January 1945 and received the Purple Heart. Alvin received many medals from WWII, including the Bronze Star and other medals that were awarded to the 101st from the United States as well as the French and Belgian governments.
After returning from military service, Alvin became a brick layer and carpenter. He was a custom home builder in the Fredericksburg area for over 35 years. Alvin loved the outdoors and deer hunting, and was a member of hunt clubs in Spotsylvania and Caroline counties. Mr. Edenton was a member of Wallers Baptist Church in Partlow and is currently a member of Spotswood Baptist Church in Fredericksburg.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Audrey Goodman Edenton; one daughter, Debra E. Chapman and her husband, James R. Chapman III; and one grandson, John Lewis Chapman all of Fredericksburg; one brother, Carroll V. Edenton and his wife, Barbara of Keswick; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 28 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel with the Rev. James R. Graham officiating. Interment will follow in Wallers Baptist Church Cemetery.
