John Edmonstone, here treated, is the lawful son of Sir James Edmonstone of Duntreath. He may be a son of his father's first wife, Helen Stirling, but, presently, the name of his mother is not known. On 25 January 1596-97, acting as his father's bailie, he gave sasine of an annualrent to Ninian Steward and his wife Dorothy Brisbayne. Glasgow Protocols X: 3175
