John was the son of Revolutionary War vet Capt. Robert Lenthal Eells (ancestor of many DAR members) and a Mayflower descendant through his mother Ruth Copeland of Scituate. John and Lucy had a son, Capt. Edward Eells, who was a noted sea captain in Camden for many years. John's father was a blacksmith and fitted out ships with ironwork. All John and Lucy Thorndyke's children were born in Camden.
