About Cpl. John Engelbrecht
John Engelbrecht was the son of John David Engelbrecht and Ellen Jane Engelbrecht (nee Mercer) who married at Waimate in the Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island on 6 August 1864. John was a farmhand when he joined the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 3rd Battalion, during World War I (Service No. WWI 15886). He was killed in action at the Somme in Northern France and is remembered on the Grevillers (New Zealand) Memorial (bio by Debbie McCauley, 21 January 2022).
