ACCIDENT NO. 28-March 21, 1910-John E. Walgren, No. 13, Osceola Lode, C.&H. John E. Walgren, a Swede, died on this day from injuries received in an accident on March 17th, 1910.
An inquest was held before Justice Fisher and the following witnesses were examined:
John Bennetts: "I work at No. 13 shaft, Osceola lode, 11th level South side. I was working there at the time of the accident to Walgren and Pollard on the 17th. When told of the accident I went down and found Walgren all doubled up by the track. We took him out to the shaft. Pollard was able to walk with a little help. He said they were blasting a "fitchered" hole."
Chas. Pollard: "Was working with deceased at the time of the accident, he was my partner. We were charging the hole and when we put in the powder with the cap attached. I think the cap must have pushed through the powder and caught on a piece of copper and exploded; that is the only way I can account for the accident; the hole was full of copper. The fuse was lighted. We had spit the fuse. We had four holes to blast. We spit the fuse before we started to put in the stick. I know we are supposed to use snuffs and not spit the fuse. We had snuffs right with us."
Verdict: "That, the said John E. Walgren came to his death on the 21st day of March, from injuries received at the 12th level, North side of No. 13 Shaft, Osceola Lode, Calumet & Hecla Mine, on March 17th, 1910, by the blast of a hole they were charging."
