John P. Gavin Jr. was born in Kansas City, MO on November 3, 1922. John spent much of his youth on golf courses caddying. Obviously, he learned how to golf and the love of the game from his father, John Gavin who was a professional golfer.

During John's time in the US Navy as a Signalman from August 7, 1942 to December 15, 1945, he performed general duties including operating blinker, flag hoist, semaphore, navigation, identification of buoys, calibrating compass, steering ship, and operating engine-order telegraph on merchant vessels. John was in the US Navy Reserve from 7 July 1947 to 6 July 1952. His active duty plus his reserve time totaled 8 years 4 months and 9 days. He was awarded the Bronze Star, World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon.

Work History: After WWII, John worked as a Floral Designer from about September 1945 to Mar 1948 at C. C. Wonneman & Sons. He received orders by clerking and telephone; designed floral arrangements,corsages, funeral sprays and decorated churches and homes for weddings. Later, John was a Timekeeper for A. P. Green Fire Brick Co. in Mexico, Missouri where he would keep time on day and piece work; keep kiln temperature records, breakage records, pay records by different cost centers and labor accounts and production and inventory records.

John met and married Arvetta Houghton who also worked at A. P. Green Fire Brick Co. in Mexico, MO. They were married on 25 Feb 1950. John and Arvetta, along with daughters Patty and Mickey moved to Moscow, ID in 1958 and then to Troy, ID about 6 months later. While living in Troy, ID, John still worked at A. P. Green Fire Brick Co. as an accountant. He was also a member of the Elks Country Club in Moscow, ID where he golfed each week. John and family attended Mass each Sunday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Moscow as there was no Catholic Church in Troy. Daughters Sharon and Brenda were born in Moscow, ID in 1959 and 1961. In April 1963, the family moved to Bothell, WA as John had transferred to E. J. Bartells, a subsidiary of A. P. Green Co. which was located in Seattle, WA. In 1965, daughter Maureen was born.

John was an officer in the Men's Club of the Snohomish Country Club for years holding the office of Treasurer. John golfed every week while he worked and almost daily after he retired.

John loved to cook which was not always appreciated by his daughters and many times dreaded. However, they did like his homemade pizza as well as his barbecued salmon and barbecued hamburgers.

John died at the age of 87 on Sunday 23 May 2010, at Odyssey Hospice in Peoria, AZ. Wife, Arvetta, and daughters Patty and Maureen were with him at his death.
