About John Gillies, Min. of Careston
"John Gillies, born 1681, a native of the West Country, whose ancestors for seven centuries had occupied themselves with the needle and bodkin became schoolmaster of Wigtown; was licen. by that Presb. 19th July 1715; app. schoolmaster of Fern in 1716; called by Presb. jure devoluto 30th Aug., and ord. 18th Sept. 1716; died 1st March 1753. He marr. 27th Sept 1711, Mary Watson, who died 16th May 1779, and had issue - John, LL.D., min. of Blackfriars, Glasgow; Robert of Little Keithock, merchant, Brechin (father of Adam G., one of the Senators of the College of Justice [Lord Gillies], and John G., LL.D., author of a History of Greece and Histographer Royal for Scotland); Mary; Isabel; Janet, and five others who died young."
