About Sir John Grant, 5th Earl of Freuchie

He was 5th Laird of Freuchie. He was infeft in the lands of Corriemony and others in 1582. He succeeded his grandfather in the estate of Freuchie before 1586. In 1590 he and others were exempted from the Earl of Huntly's commission of justiciary. In 1590 he entered into a bond to keep good rule in the Highlands. In 1592 he received a commission of justiciary. In 1609, he acquired from James, Earl of Moray, the Lordship of Abernethy, and from Thomas Nairn of Cromdale, the lands of Cromdale. He received numerous bonds of manrent from members of his clan, and entered into various similar contracts with neighbouring barons. In 1613 he took part against the Macgregors, and the same year he and his clan received a general remission for all offences. In 1620 he and his son, Sir John Grant of Mulben, were appointed deputy-commissioners against the gypsies.

   KINSHIP: 1st son and heir.
   MILITARY: Entered into a bond of offence and defence with the Earls of Atholl and Moray and other northern lairds, and also separately with Mackintosh of Dunachton against Huntly 1590. Huntly proved too strong for his enemies at that time and a reconciliation was patched up between him and the Lairds of Freuchie and Dunachton, but with the murder of the Earl of Moray by Huntly, caused the whole feud to bread out again 1591.
   POLITICS: He signed, along with the King and certain northern Barons, bonds in defence of the true religion against the Roman Catholic conspiracy and the Earls of Huntly and Erroll 1589.
   PROPERTY: Succeeded father in Corriemony 1583.
   PROPERTY: Succeeded grandfather as laird of Freuchie {Freuchie, Cromdale, Moray, Scotland}.
   PROPERTY: Had a charter in implement of a contract of the lands of Inverallan and others, in the count of Inverness 1587.
   PROPERTY: Had a charter of the lands of the two Auchnarrows and others in Inverness 1589, which were ultimately conjoined with the barony of Cromdale 1609.
   PROPERTY: He acquired the lands of Over and Nether Kinmenitie and others 1598.
