J. W. GRIGGS DEAD AT 71 FORMER STATE LAWMAKER IN ILL HEALTH YEAR

Dean of Southwest Missouri Life Insurance Writers Will Be Buried Tomorrow

John William Griggs, 71, widely-known Carthage resident and former state representative from this district, died at 5:25 o'clock yesterday afternoon at McCune-Brooks Hospital. Mr. Griggs had been in failing health about a year. He was a patient at St. John's Hospital, Joplin, several weeks in June, 1933 and last October entered McCune-Brooks Hospital here for treatment. His condition improved and he was removed to his home, 1324 South Garrison Avenue. He re-entered the local hospital last week when his condition became critical. He suffered from a complication of ailments.

Born Near Mt. Vernon He grew to manhood on a farm near Mt. Vernon, Lawrence county, Missouri where he was born February 9, 1863. He remained on the farm with his father, the late M. F. Griggs, until his marriage to Miss Mollie E. Cherry of Mt. Vernon on March 17, 1887 when he and his bride moved to Mt. Vernon. Mr. Griggs was a teacher in the Lawrence county schools two years prior to his marriage and continued in that profession a year following his marriage. He then entered the milling business at Mt. Vernon which business he followed several years until his mill was destroyed by fire. Mr. Griggs had been active in Republican politics for many years, serving first as a member of the Republican executive committee of Lawrence county and later serving four years as deputy recorder of that county. He was elected probate judge of Lawrence county and served in that capacity four years. At the expiration of his term as probate judge, Mr. Griggs accepted a position with the Illinois Life Insurance Company, after which he and MRs. Griggs moved to Carthage and they had made this their home since. They have lived here 30 years. He was dean of underwriters in southwest Missouri. Mr. Griggs served two terms in the Carthage council from the fifth ward about 20 years ago. His son, J. C. Griggs, is now councilman from that ward. Mr. Griggs was elected to the state legislature in 1928, serving in the 55th general assembly.

A Church Leader He was an active worker in the First Presbyterian church here and served as chairman of the building committee, under whose direction the new church was completed in June 1917. He had served as deacon, elder, Sunday school superintendent and was a member of the board of trustees of the church during his residence here. He was also a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and of the I.O.O.F. lodges. He was highly regarded by all who knew him. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mollie Griggs; a daughter, Mrs. Nelle Locke, at home, and a son, J. C. Griggs of Carthage, and a grandson, John Porter Griggs. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the First Presbyterian church with Dr. Walter F. Bradley, pastor, and Dr. George F. Harbour in charge. A brief prayer service will be held at the home at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon before the body is removed to the church. Burial will be in Park Cemetery.
