About John Guild, Sr.

Ben M. Angel notes: The town of Dobhaur doesn't show up anywhere except as a proposed English birthplace, supposedly located in Suffolk. There is no other support for the existence of such a named place. Therefore, will identify the birthplace as being within Suffolk, England, until better identification of the birth place can be found.

John Guild left Scotland in 1636 and settled in Dedham, MA. He became a freeman 05/10/1643 in Cambridge, MA when he took the oath before Rev. Lucius R. Paige. John married Elizabeth Crooke on 06/24/1645 in Roxbury, MA.

Note ===Burleigh #1 "John Guild, supposed to have been born in England about 1616, came to America in the year 1636, with his brother Samuel and sister Ann. He was admitted to the church at Dedham, MA Jul 17 1640, andbought in this year twelve acres of upland on which he built a house which was occupied by himself and descendants for more than two hundred years. He was made a freeman May 10 1643, and as one of the original grantees had assigned to him and his heirs forever, three roods and twelve rods, more or less, to which he added by grants and purchases, considerable other real estate in Dedham,Wrentham, Medfield and Natick. He was thoroughly honest in all his dealings and industrious and frugal, modest in his deportment, and retiring in his habits. He never held any office, and the town records show his attendance at town meeting but once in several years, and then on an occasion of considerableexcitement in relation to making alterations and additions to the meeting-house. He married, June 24, 1645, Elizabeth Crooke, of Roxbury, who transferred her relation from the church of that place to the church in Dedham July 4, 1649. She died Aug. 31, 1669. He died Oct. 4, 1682, leaving the following will...."(see book). Total 153 pounds 11 shillings. Signature. <ref> Burleigh page 25</ref>: !Torrey, NEW ENGLAND MARRIAGES PRIOR TO 1700 - shows ref's. Corresponding with a descendant in Vermont it was confirmed the name rhymes with "child".: !Dorothy Gile Mills, on her research trip to Boston in 1994 - "Source: The well-known historian of Dedham, Mass., Robert Hanson, met with me twice. He has researched all the immigrants to Dedham arriving before 1770. He was familiar with the Gile, Guile, Guild, Gild name. He made the following comments: 1. The relationship of Anne, John and Samuel is speculative because no record exists. They were the only ones in this area with the same surname. The only other ones were Edward Guile recorded 1634 in Salem, Mass., and Matthew Guile recorded 1643 in Dover, NH. (Note by John Gile - other records show Giles.)2. The appearance of John in the records of Dedham was out of the normal sequence of events. He joined the church July 6, 1640 but he did not have rights and was not granted land. He was probably an indentured servant. The marriage of Anne in 1638 in Dedham is the only document atthat time. In 1641, John purchased 12 acres from John Roper and later obtained land grants from the town. Samuel obtained no land in Haverhill and did not marry until 1647. His wife's family (Davis) were not recorded as being in Dedham. (JCG - should be Dedham, not Haverhill in the last sentence.)3. The Gile people were probably from Suffolk, England because Mr. Hanson had found a 1628 will from the archdeaconryof Suffolk made by a widow, Margery Gilde with two sons, John and Samuel. A photocopy of this will has been made. 4. Samuel Gile (the sonof the first Samuel) was hung for rape. 5. Records of births, marriages and deaths for Dedham and Haverhill were given to me.6. Photocopies of pages 439-440 from Cutter's Genealogical Memoirs mentioning 7 generations of the Gile family were given me.": !Research of Hugh Swofford Sr. "1682 - John Guild, Dedham, Mass, d. 4 Oct. 1682 age 64, bro. of Samuel Guile." (JCG - I have not found source of age 64 - It looks like a conclusion based on the speculated ages shown in Burleigh).
