About John Hamlin
John Hamlin, son of James Hamlin and Mary Dunham, is speculated to have married (unknown) Unk and had at least two issue- 1. John Hamlin b. ABT 1703 in Hunterdon County NJ and 2. Thomas Hamlin Sr b. ABT 1709 in Hunterdon County NJ.
John Hamlin may have d. 1734.
In H. Franklin Andrews' The Hamlin Family, A Genealogy of James Hamlin of Barnstable Massachusetts (1902) Andrews was under the impression that John Hamlin (Son of James Jr, grandson of James Sr) had died unmarried since he was not mentioned in his father's will: "b. Barnstable, Mass, Jan 12 1683-4: he was not mentioned in his father's will 1717, nor any wife or child of him; from this fact it is supposed he was then dead and unmarried." p.48.
Nonetheless, John Hamlin's mother (Mary Dunham, dau. of John Dunham but not Dorothy Day) is closely related to the Dunhams of Hunterdon and Warren counties of New Jersey who settled in those locations at the same time John and his son and grandson were residing there. It is purely speculative, but it is possible that John Hamlin relocated to New Jersey with them and was not in his father's will for whatever unknown reason. The New Jersey descendants of this John Hamlin changed their surname to Hamlen, so perhaps there had been a falling out within the family that has eluded researchers.
This is entirely speculative of course, and until documentation is uncovered to flesh-out the two generations between James Hamlin (of 1636-1718) to Maj. Thomas Hamlen (1729-1810) very little more can be said.
