About John Handley
of Muskham Grange
Clare College, Cambridge 1799. In partnership with his elder brother William. In 1828 he became Captain of the Newark Troop of the Sherwood Rangers (the Notts Militia) and continued with the troop until at least 1835. He took up residence at Muskham Grange in 1817 as a furnished let, purchasing the property with 530 acres of arable and grazing land. Briefly an MP, he was elected to Newark Town Council in 1836 and in that same year was appointed High Sheriff for the County of Nottinghamshire. The Poll Book for July 1852 shows that he was then residing at Northgate.
