About John Israel Hartman, Jr.
The Gettysburg Times November 19, 1923
Injuries sustained when he was attacked by a bull at 6:30 this morning caused the death four hours later of John R. Hartman, prominent farmer of Mummasburg, and veteran of the Civil War. Although the animal was dehorned, it crushed Mr. Harman’s chest, broke his shoulder and caused internal injuries from which he died. Mr. Hartman was aged 78 years, 6 months and 17 days. When Mr. Hartman went to the barn this morning, he found that a bull, which ordinarily was kept tied in the stable, had broken loose, escaped from the enclosure around the barnyard and was in an adjoining field. Armed with a pitchfork, Mr. Hartman went into the field and endeavored to drive the animal back into the stable. While he was engaged in this, the bull, hitherto not considered cross, tuned on him, throwing him to the ground. While he was down, the bull gored Mr. Hartman with its head causing injuries which resulted in his death. While the bull was attacking Mr. Hartman, he screamed, attracting the attention of William Taylor, a hired man on the Hartman farm for thirty years. Mr. Taylor distracted the bull’s attention from Mr. Hartman. Meanwhile David Deardorff, of Mummasburg, was attracted to the scene, and after the bull had bee gotten to the barn, he and Mr. Taylor assisted the injured man to the house. Mr. Hartman was able to walk to the house, assisted by the two men. HE was conscious until the end. Physicians in attendance were unable to do more than relieve the injured man’s suffering. Mr. Hartman was a son of the late Mr. And Mrs. John Hartman, and was born near Cashtown, but lived almost his entire life in Franklin township at Mummasburg. His wife died five years ago. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. H. E. Berkey, who with her husband, Rev. Mr. Berkey, has been with her father for the past two and one-half years. Rev. Mr. Berky is supply pastor of the Arendtsville Lutheran charge. Three sisters, Mrs. Catherine Minter, Abilene, Kansas; Mrs. Sara Hoke, Frederick, Maryland, and Miss Amanda Hartman, Mummasburg, also survive. Funeral services Wednesday morning at 10:00 from his late home in Mummasburg, conducted by the Rev. Dr. D. T. Koser, of Gettysburg formerly pastor of the Arendtsville Lutheran charge. Interment in Flohr’s Church cemetery.
In 1860, he was a laborer - albeit from a wealthy family - living in Franklin Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania.
He married Catherine "Kate" Mickley and fathered Cora Elizabeth (b. 11/03/70 - married Rev. Harvey Edmund).* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Dec 28 2020, 2:37:23 UTC
