About John Frederick Haslanger

HASLANGER, John Frederick, 102 years old, passed away at home on Tuesday, June 10, 2014. He was born in South Bend, Indiana, the third of four children of Emma Louise Muessel and Frederick William Haslanger. He grew up on the family farm in Lakeville, Indiana where he developed the work ethic that he continued throughout his life. He graduated from Lakeville High School and earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Purdue University in 1936. Throughout his adult life he was known as J. Fred or just Fred Haslanger. He married Margaret Isabelle McEowen of Greenville, Ohio on October 2, 1937 and they relocated to Dayton Ohio. His career at the Inland Division of General Motors began in 1936 and continued until his retirement in 1974. He was a dedicated father and husband who sacrificed to support the development and education of his children. He demonstrated the importance of family by the high priority he placed on time with his wife and children. He was an active member of his community and Fairview United Methodist Church. He particularly enjoyed and took great pride in his grandchildren, sharing in the celebration of their life events. Following retirement he volunteered in multiple community organizations including the FROC Priority Board, City Plan Board, the Historic Architecture Committee, Access30 Dayton and the Miami Valley Arts Council. He was honored for his volunteerism in many ways including the Leonard P Roberts Award from United Way. Fred was preceded in death by his daughters: Dorothy Suzanne Driever, August 8, 1995 and Karen Louise Vaneman, October 29, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 76 years Margaret Isabelle, two children Martin F, and Kathryn D, grandchildren Deborah Trosper, Scott Driever, Christopher Vaneman, Andrea Haslanger, Jon Haslanger, and David Berlin, as well as seven great grandchildren. Memorial services will take place at Fairview United Methodist Church, 828 West Fairview Avenue on Saturday, June 14, 2014, at 2:00pm. Family and friends may gather at the church from 1:00pm until the time of services.
