About John Hawkins, of Oxford

John (5), younger son of John (4) and Mary Dewe, born 1680, imigrated to Virginia 1705 at St. Annes Parish Essex Co. He aquired land in St. George Parish in Spotsylvania Co., in King William Co., and in Caroline Co,. He married Mary Long, daughter of John Long, another early settler in Virginia. John (5) was thought to be a close relative possibly a brother of Philomon Hawkins who came to Virginia with his wife Eleanor Ann Howard. They all settled near Todd's Ridge which was at that time in King and Queen County over the Metapony River. (County boundaries changed often in early Virginia as the population increased.) A book written by descendants of Philomon Hawkins claims that he is a direct descendant of Sir John Hawkins. Records and deeds in the above counties show the dates and locations of land transactions for John Hawkins and Philomon.

John (5) and Mary had children; Joseph, Philomon, William, Mary, Phebe, and Elizabeth. There was possibly a son named Nicholas. He mentions some of them in land transactions but his will was destroyed. His death occured 1740.

Son of Elizabeth Hawkins, not Eleanor Cole Hawkins

Henry Hawkins, of Charles County, in his Will dated 18 October 1698 and proved 12 May 1699, recorded in "Maryland Will Book, 6: 310, named his wife Elizabeth (who was the widow of Francis Wyne) and his six children. Of these two were by his first wife. They were Henry Hawkins and Ellinor (Hawkins) Tubman. The others were children of his second wife Eleanor and were John Hawkins, Henry Holland Hawkins (so named to distinquish him from his half brothers, Henry Hawkins and Henry Wine). Ruth Hawkins and Mary Hawkins. Henry Holland Hawkins became "whole and sole executor" under his mother's Will. Ruth Hawkins became the first wife of James Keech, Gent., and had daughters named Martha and Elizabeth Keech, mentioned in the Will of their grandmother Elizabeth Hawkins already cited.

Henry and Eleanor Hawkins (first wife) were early settlers.
