About John Heap, IV

Only surviving son of George Heap and second wife Mary Jacobs. Moved to Carlisle, in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, where he was listed as a storekeeper in 1779-81, and was also a resident of Shippensburg. According to the Heap Family records, "John erected two fine residences, a handsome brick one in Carlisle, which was for some years owned by James Hamilton, Esq., and bequeathed by him to the town of Carlisle to be used as a public library. The other was a large stone mansion in Shippensburg, PA where his younger children were born. His wife had great moral force of character, possessing the inflexible virtues of her Scotch Presbyterian ancestors. John often spoke of seeing General Lafayette."

Died intestate. Buried in the Big Spring Presbyterian Cemetery.

John Heap married Margaret Kerr, (daughter of John & Janet Kerr of Carlisle, Penna.) who died in 1796. They had seven children, as related by "Heap Memorial", Mary Heap Welch (1819-1894): 1. George Heap, b. 1776 in Carlisle, PA; married and removed to Ohio and then to Olney, Ill; died in 1855; had issued: 5 sons & 3 daughters. 2. John Heap, b. in 1779; died unmarried in middle age. 3. Samuel Davies Heap, b. 08OCT1781; d. 02OCT1853 4. Jane Heap, b. 1784 in Carlisle, Pa; married Charles Wells of Connellsville, Pa.;one son Charles Wells who died before coming of age. 5. Mary Heap, b. 25NOV1786; marr. 1808 to Ebenezer Welch of West Virginia; had issue: 3 sons and 2 daughters. 6. Rebecca Heap, b. 1789 in Shippensburg, Pa; married John Page of Connellsville, Pa; removed to Ohio; had issue; 2 sons & one daughter. 7. James Heap, b. 1791; d. 16SEP1792 aged 10 mos.

John then married secondly, Mrs. Sarah Smith (born Donaldson of Wilmington, Del.). She died 19JAN1802 at Shippensburg in her 30th year. They had two children, as related by "Heap Memorial", Mary Heap Welch (1819-1894):

8. unnamed son who died in infancy 9. Sarah Ann Heap, marr. Francis Anthony Thornton, Purser, USN who resided in Baltimore, Md and died 25FEB1862. They had issue: 5 daughters and one son

John then married Jane Wilson (born Mahon), widow of the Rev. Samuel Wilson, late pastor of the Big Spring Presbyterian Church, Newville, who died 04MAR1799.

John died in Newville intestate on 25MAR1828. He was buried in the Big Spring Presbyterian Cemetery with a gravestone with date reported as illegible in 1898. His widow Jane (Mahon-Wilson) Heap died 29MAY1835 aged 74 years and was buried with a gravestone inscribed "wife of Rev. Samuel Wilson."
