John left St. Croix County, Wisconsin, before 1905, going first to California to work on a dairy farm. He then went to Madison, Wisconsin, to the University of Wisconsin for a short time. He went to work for Henry Nicolai in Big Bend, where he was married to Maude Nicolai. When henry Nicolai moved west to Washington, John bouth his farm and stgore in Big Bend. In 1909, John sold out the Big Bend property and moved his family to Sunnyside, Washington, where he again farmed with his father-in-law. From 1913 to 1918 his father-in-laws farm, moved back to Sunnyside, and lived there until his death. He was active in several business's in Sunnyside, was a State Senator in 1931, and was a member of the Sunnyside City Council and Sunnyside School Board.
