About John James Hooper
Although a very successful farmer, John was unable to read or write. John has given me a dilemma. His mother was almost certainly Susan-he was living with her during at least 2 censuses and one of his daughters was called Susan. His father was James. James and Susan were married in Chard. In the parish records for Chard, the only John James Hooper was baptised as the son of James and Mary. The only explanation that I can think of is that there was a mistake. John was baptised on the same day as his elder (by 2 years) sister, Mary. Perhaps this indicated that James and Susan weren't regular church goers. If the minister was recording events a few days later, perhaps he mixed the mother's name up with the daughter's.
