About John Walter Hoskins
Notes: Walter Hoskins owned the New Merchants Hotel in Campbellsville. A large brick building, it still stands on Main Street. The hotel had one permanent guest - Oliver Merle. Mr. Merle had his own chair in the lobby, a leather chair that tilted back. The rest of the large lobby was furnished with tall backed chairs. It had a tile floor and a fireplace that children used to send letters to Santa at Christmas. There were "elephant ear" plants as well. Ice cream was served on Sunday and Monday nights. "Cake Walk" pictures - still in the family - hung in the Dining Room. Many evenings the family and guests sat outside on the sidewalk to watch the cars go by on Main Street.
