John Dunlap Howe had a white swelling in his knee before marriage and walked with two crutches. He moved to Callaway Co., Missouri in 1847 and lived near Mt. Carmel Church on a farm known as "The Hiram Bybee" place. He was a school teacher and vocal music teacher. He had considerable musical talent and also painted.
