John H. Brumfield was the eldest son of William Wirt and Eleanor Hoover Brumfield. He was born on 25 September 1803 on the Mouth Big Ugly Creek in Kanawha County, (West) Virginia, USA. John was 19 years old when he married Rachel Haskings on the 28 July 1823 in Lawrence County, Ohio, USA. She was 15 years old when she married. Rachel was born in 1808 in Sandusky, Sandusky County, Ohio, USA (this information is from Ancestry.com) the daughter of William and Francis (Unknown) Haskins. They lived in Big Ugly Creek in now in Lincoln County, West Virginia, USA. They were blessed with 16 children. Their first a son named Wirt Brumfield his birth date is unknown. Next they had a daughter named Emmazette Brumfield she was born in September 1824. the third child was a daughter named Valeria Brumfield she was born in September 1826. the forth child was a son named Tennessee Brumfield he was born in 1828. The fifth child was a daughter named Margaret Ann Brumfield she was born in 1829. The sixth child was a son named William Randolph Brumfield he was born in 1833. The seventh was another son named Jack S. Brumfield he was born in 1834. The eighth was named Eleanor Ellen Brumfield she was born in 1836. the ninth was a son named Paris Brumfield he was born in 1837. Their tenth child was another son named Allen Brumfield he was born in 1839. The eleventh was a son named Evermont Brumfield he was born on 15 July 1841. They next had a daughter named Nancy Brumfield born in 1844. Another daughter named Rachel Brumfield was born in 1844. The 1830 Census of Logan County listed his household. On 1 November 1833 John’s father, William died. In his Will presented in the courts on the 24 November 1833 stated the following: John H., Henderson P., Allen T., Jordon, Bostick Brumfield, Susanah Brumfield, wife of John Hatfield, were given a 150 acre tract of land, his wheat crop and debts payable both to and by him. John and Rachel purchased land near the mouth of Big Ugly Creek on 4 December 1833. John received 75 acres From George Spears, located at mouth of Ugly Creek of Guyandotte (Cabell County Deed Book V, page 280). He appeared on the 1843 tax list of Logan County and 1850, 1860 Censuses. Their residence was Gill, mouth of Big Ugly. John died 8 October 1854, in the Civil War, but was not a soldier he was 51 years old. In the 1880 United States Federal Census Record listed Rachel Brumfield and her daughter, Nancy living in Sheridan, Lincoln County , West Virginia, USA. Rachel died in 1880 she was 72 years old. Their last daughter, Caroline, was never married and died in 1903 at the age of 40 years old
