Mine Inspector Report

ACCIDENT NO. 49. July 21, 1909-John Junnila, Isle Royale Mine. John Junnila died on this date at St. Joseph's Hospital, Hancock. He was injured in No. 5 shaft, Isle Royale Mine, on May 28, 1909.

An inquest over his body was held by Justice Little and the following witnesses were examined:

Dr. Joseph Berry: "Junnila suffered from a fracture of the skull. An operation was performed and the scalp cut down to find the fracture. A piece of his skull was removed leaving a hole which was about 7/8 of an inch across. He never recovered real consciousness as the hole in his skull left a hernia in the brain. I was present this morning when he died and would say his death was the result of the fracture to his skull."

Edward Jenkins: "I am employed by said company as foreman of No. 5 shaft. I was working in the bottom of No. 5 shaft on the 28th day of May. We were sinking. About 8:30 in the morning, I heard some rocks coming down the shaft, and called to the men to come to the south side of the shaft. I was about 4 feet from the south end of the shaft on the divide. There were 4 muckers, 4 miners and 4 or 5 timbermen in the bottom of the shaft at this time. I went back to the shaft and saw that a man had been knocked down and that he had received a bad wound in his head. I ordered him to be taken to surface immediately. This man was Junnila, though I did not know who had been struck at the time. The bucket which is used for hoisting rock while sinking from the bottom to the pocket between the 4th and 5th levels had just been filled by the muckers, and hoisted to the pocket. I, of course, supposed the rock had fallen from the bucket in dumping and went at once to see the dumper. He told me that in dumping he had lost control of the bucket, and he tipped it backwards instead of forwards, thus dumping about half of the rock which was in the bucket into the shaft. There was nothing wrong with the cables or the bucket."

Above testimony was corroborated by several other witnesses.

Verdict: "We, the jury have come to the conclusion that the said John Junnila, came to his death, as the result of injuries received by rock falling from the bucket in dumping and striking him on the head, on the 28th day of May, 1909, while working on the bottom of No. 5 shaft of the Isle Royale Mine, between the 5th and 6th levels."

Houghtonin piirikunnan kaivostarkastajan raportti

Onnettomuus nro 49 - 21. heinäkuuta 1909 - John Junnila, Isle Royale Mine. John Junnila kuoli tänään St. Joseph's -sairaalassa Hancockissa. Hän oli loukkaantunut 28.5.1909 Isle Royale -kaivoksen kuilussa nro 5.

Tapaturmatutkintaa johti rauhantuomari Little ja seuraavia todistajia kuultiin:

Tohtori Joseph Berry: "Junnila oli saanut kallonmurtuman. Suoritettiin kirurginen leikkaus ja päänahka leikattiin pois murtuman löytämiseksi. Palanen kalloa poistettiin ja siitä jäi noin 7/8-osaa tuuman suuruinen aukko. Hän ei koskaan palannut tajuihinsa, koska reikä kallossaan teki aivoihin repeämän ("hernia"). Olin paikalla hänen kuollessaan tänä aamuna ja voin sanoa, että kuolinsyynä oli kallonmurtuma."

Edward Jenkins: "Työskentelen edellämainitussa yhtiössä kuilun nro 5 työnjohtajana ("foreman"). 28. toukokuuta oli työssä kuilun nro 5 pohjalla. Olimme syventämässä kuilua. Noin kello 8:30 aamulla kuulin kivenlohkareiden putoavan kuiluun ja käskine miesten tulla kuilun eteläsivulle. Olin noin 4 jalan päässä kuilun eteläpäästä välisenämällä "on the divide". Silloin kuilun pohjalla oli 4 lapiomiestä, 4 kaivosmiestä ja 4 tai 5 timpuria. Menin takaisin kuiluun ja huomasin että yksi mies oli kaatuneena maahan ja että hänellä oli paha haava päässään. Käskin välittömästi viedä hänet maanpinnalle. Se mies oli Junnila, vaikken silloin tiennyt keneen lohkare oli iskenyt. Kuuppa jolla kiviainesta nostetaan kuilua syvennettäessä taskuun tasojen 4 ja 5 välille oli juuri täytetty ja nostettu taskuun. Tietenkin arvelin, että kivi oli pudonnut kuupasta kun sitä tyhjennettiin ja menin katsomaan kippimiestä. Hän kertoi menettäneensä kipatessa kuupan hakkinnan, ja kipannut sen taaksepäin eikä eteenpäin, ja siten pudottanut noin puolet kuupan sisällöstä kuiluun. Kuupassa tai vaijereissa ei ollut mitään vikaa."

Useat muut todistajat vahvistivat ylläolevan todistajalausunnon.

Päätös: "Me valamiehistö olemme tulleet johtopäätökseen, että John Junnila menehtyi vammoihinsa, jotka oli saanut nostokuupasta pudonneiden kivien iskettyä häntä päähän 28. toukokuuta 1909 hänen ollessan työssä Isle Royale -kaivoksen kuilussa nro 5, tasojen 5 ja 6 välissä."
