About John Lane, Major

John Lane was made Lieutenant of the Militia - Aug. 23, 1693. He was Lieutenant in command of the Billerica Troops in King William's War in 1693, and was commissioned Captain of Billerica Troops Oct. 4, 1699 (Regimental Officer).

He received commission as Major in the West Regiment of Horse & Foot, from Govenor Joseph Dudley, June 23, 1711.

John Lane was very active in the Indian alarms before and after 1700, respecting which many papers have been preserved. In the history of these Indian wars, his name comes into view as the leading military man in town.

Lieutenant John Lane made a free man, April 18, 1690; a selectman in 1693-1704, inclusive.

He inherited his father's lands in Yorkshire, England, Sept. 28, 1696

Capt. John Lane received his commission as Major in the West Regiment of Horse and Foot from Gov. Joseph Dudley June 23, 1711. He is also said to have been Colonel of Massachusetts Militia and died in military service.─Society of Colonial Wars.

  • Major John Lane (Job), 1661 - 1715, born Malden, Mass, May, 1661, was a leading citizen of Billerica, Mass. where he was rated Aug. 24, 1688, the highest tax on the list. He was made freeman April 18, 1690; selectman 1693, '6,-1704, '9, eleven years; committee to seat the meeting house 1694, and the same year a highway was laid out from the "Concord Road" to his place; inherited by his father's will Sept. 28, 1696, "all the lands I have in England in Yorkshire, also one-half of my estate in Billerica," 750 acres of the Winthrop Purchase.
  • Mr Lane was an officer in the militia and very active in the Indian alarms before and after 1700. He was Lieutentant in command of the Billerica troop in King Williams war, 1693.

  • John2 Whipple (John1, MatthewA) baptized 25 December 1625 in Bocking, Essex County, England; died 10 August 1683 in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts. He married (1) Martha Reyner about 1653 at Ipswich. She died 24 February 1679 in Ipswich (2) Mrs. Elizabeth (Cogswell) Paine 28 June 1680 at Ipswich. John emigrated to Massachusetts Bay colony in 1638 with his parents when he was almost 13 years old. He was an entrepreneur and started a number of business in Ipswich. He was an officer in King Philip's War, served as selectman, Essex county treasurer, and Ipswich's representative to the general court for four years between 1674-1683. He left an estate of £3,000. John and Elizabeth had no children.
