GEDCOM Note

Lantz family came to America, we know by authentic history, as early as 1710, and settled in the state of New York. The Lantz family is of German stock but they came from the city of Speyer in Bavaria on the Rhine River. They came because they had been murdered, severely scourged and robbed by the armies of Louis XIV of France. They spake the German tongue and quite a few of the families have the German accent to this day.

Hart in his Source Books, Volume 2, says that all Palatan- ates came from Pfalz and Pfalz is the king's palace at Speyer, which city is the capitol of the Rhinish Bavaria, fourteen miles south of Heidelburg, and is one of the oldest cities of Germany. . Lantzknecht was shortened to Lanz or Lantz as early as the sixteenth century. The abbreviation did not take place, however, in Germany, but if this is any interest to you, in Italy and Sparin where during the progress of war-like developments the German Landsknecht came now and then. The families who bear this name apparently have been members of the families who were at one time Landsknecht imperial soldiers, or soldiers drafted somewhere in the empire. This completely settles the question of the origin and meaning of our name, in both forms, Lantz (which is pure German) and Lance (pure French) either is correct, but being of German descent we prefer the German name. We shall ever be greatly indebted to Prof. Otto Mauker for giving to us the splendid origin of our name.
