About John Wesley Presley Lasure

1930 Census -shown as born in Illinois, father in Penn., mother in Switzerland; occupation - mgr. grain elevator

BUT, his handwritten information written by John, at the Kansas Historical Society, says he was born in Woodsfield, Ohio. Regardless of what the census and funeral card says, I am going with his own writings.

Funeral Card:

John Presley, son of Andrew J. and Maria (Emch) Lasure, was born Sept. 20, 1866, at New Martinsville, IL. He departed this life on June 11, 1960 at K.C., MO. His age was 93 years, 8 months, and 21 days.

As a boy he attended elementary school, mostly in Ohio. In the early eighties, he came west to Hays, KS. Here he was united in marriage to Mary Belle Gross on Sept. 30, 1890. There were two children born to this union. He came with his family to Russell in 1894 and resided here for 53 years. During this time he played an active role in the community in business, social, civic, church and fraternal affairs. For many years he engaged in the grain business, being associated with the former Russell Milling Co., and the A.J. Poor Grain Co. He was a long time member of the First Congregational Church and received his 50 year membership pins from both the Russell Masonic and Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodges, some years ago. He also belonged to the Easter Star and Rebecca Orders. About 13 years ago, they moved to K.C. to be with their daughter Mildred. On June 28, 1957, his helpmate and companion of 67 years, preceded him in death.

Mr. Lasure enjoyed living and appreciated the many changes that transpired during his life span of over 9 decades. Always active and alert, he enjoyed watching baseball and other sports on television until he became ill only about 6 weeks ago.
