About John George Lee, Jr

John George Lee's grandfather is George Lee who married Martha George. There is very little about this branch of Lee's who left Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland to go to Ohio. In searching George Lee and Martha George, we come up with George Washington and his wife Martha.

Family records show letters written back and forth to and from family members stating that George Lee and Martha George were married 25 December 1777. This makes sense because John George Sr. was in Maryland when he met and married Elizabeth Lowman, the daughter of Richard Lowman and Rachel Harris. The Lowman's are a well loved, and respected family in their community. John and Elizabeth met in Boston, in King and Queen County, they were married there, and left for Virginia sometime after their marriage. One story tells that Elizabeth's parent did not approve of their marriage, so Elizabeth's bother helped her escape through a window at night, where she met with George and they left to be married. They left for Virginia after being married. Both families, the Lee's and Lowman's families were involved in Government, and traveled between West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland often. As you view the areas their children were born, you can see they were in different areas throughout their history of child bearing and rearing.

George and Martha were married by Rev. John Alderson in Greenbrier County, West Virginia.

1st son will be named after the baby's father's father. 2nd son will be named after the baby's mother's father. 3rd son will be named after the baby's Father. 4th son will be named after the baby's father's oldest brother. This sets the pattern of the next son being named after the baby's father's next to the oldest brother.

This pattern is broken if a name is already taken. An example of this would be if the 1st son is named for both of his grandfathers who in this case would have the same name. then the name skips to the next person on the list.

Another break in this pattern happens if a person is of significant importance, has considerable wealth or in any way is famous for one reason or another.

For daughters born into the family the naming tradition is the same, just turned to fit the maternal lines:

1st dau named for the baby's mothers mother. 2nd dau named for the baby's father's mother. 3rd dau named for the baby's mother. 4th dau named for the baby's mother's oldest sister, and so sets the pattern for the next daughter being named for the mother's next to the oldest sister and so forth.

Again this pattern is broken if a name is already taken. An example of this would be if the 1st dau is named for both of her grandmothers who in this case would have the same name, then the name skips to the next person on the list.

Another break in this pattern happens if a person is of significant importance, has considerable wealth or in any way is famous for one reason or another.
