About John Grainger Leith
Tokoroa men 27-year-old John Grainger Leith and brothers Trevor and Grahame were spearfishing from a dinghy one afternoon off Te Kaha. They were about 150m offshore in water about 4m deep when John screamed. The water was thick with blood as Trevor swam over to try and help his mate. The brothers managed to get John into the dingy and tried to stop his bleeding, but he had been bitten once in the calf and again in his inner thigh. By the time they managed to get back to the rocks John had died from shock and blood loss. John left behind a wife, Lynn, and two young children, Barry and Sharon.
