Accident 13. - December 20. - John Lettia was killed at the 28th level in No. 6 shaft Hecla branch of the Calumet and Hecla mine. Lettia with two other men dumped a car of rock into the skip. He then went on the skip to level the rocks which they had dumped so that none might fall off while being hoisted up the shaft. While he was on the skip the gate timber broke letting the skip down the shaft about three feet. The bail of the skip struck Lettia on the back and he fell under it and was jammed between the shaft timbers and skip. An Inquest was held before Coroner Macdonald, The jury rendered the following verdict: "We find that John Lettia came to his death at the 28th level No. 6 shaft Hecla mine accidentally."
