John C. Lewis Passes Away Pioneer Settler of Lewis Township Dies As Result Of Old Age.

John Chilson Lewis, aged 83 years, for nearly sixty years a resident of this county, died at 9:15 Tuesday evening at the home of his son, H. C. Lewis of Lewis township, after a three months illness with the infirmities of old age.

He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. S. S. Wymore of Stuart, Neb., one son, H. C. Lewis, at whose home he died, and two brothers, Nelson Lewis of Lewis township and George Lewis of Monroe, Mich.

Mr. Lewis was born in Monroe, Mich., in 1829. In 1852 he left home to make the overland journey to California, being 101 days on the road. He engaged in mining enterprises and remained for several years on the coast, returning to Michigan by way of the Isthmus and the water route.

In the spring of 1856 he came to this county and purchased eighty acres of land on which stood a log house that had been built by the Mormons. Later he acquired other farms and had only recently retired from active management of his property. His long residence here has made him widely known, and Lewis township was named in honor of the five Lewis brothers who settled within its borders. Announcment of the funeral will be made later.

The funeral of John Chilson Lewis, who died Thursday evening, will be held at 2:30 Friday afternoon at the home of his son, H. C. Lewis. Burial will be in the Lewis cemetery.
