About John Paul 'Poney' Little

John P. "Poney" Little married Nancy Hogan about 1807. They had about 13 children. Nancy died Jan. 18, 1845, and John married Ann Chadwell Vest on February 22, 1847 in Marshall County, Tennessee. Ann was about 26 years younger than John. They had one child, Ann Eliza Tayler Little, who was born about 1848 in Marshall County, Tennessee. Found in the 1880 U.S. Census for Maury, Tennessee, is listed a man named Poney Little who was 95 years old and deaf. He was living with a family named C. P. & Ann Eliza Halcomb. Mr. Halcomb was 29 years of age and Ann Eliza was 32 years old. Poney Little's relationship to C.P. Halcomb as head of household was listed as "Old Man" and in the Occupation column it stated "Old Man". Undoubtedly, John was living with his daughter from his 2nd marriage, Ann Eliza, whose husband was Constantine Perkins "Tobias" Halcomb. John Little's 2nd wife, Ann Chadwell, had died about 5 years prior on October 1, 1875.

So far, there has not been a record found as to the age of John Paul "Poney" Little when he died, but this last record shows him as being almost 100 years old!

From The Little Bit, Vol. XIII, No. 1, Spring 1990, pp. 1325-1326. "John P. Little was born on his father's plantation, after his father had sold his property in the town of Salisbury, North Carolina. In 1793, his father moved to Cabarrus (then Mecklenburg) County, North Carolina. In 1800 he moved his family to Kershaw County, South Carolina, apparently accompanying his older sister Elizabeth and her husband Benjamin Shinn. By the time his father wrote in his will in 1807, John was in charge of the plantation. In his will Daniel (his father) mentions his own 'frail body' and that he was dependent on his son John to bring in the crop. John married Nancy Hogan about 1807 and their first child was born in South Carolina. It is not clear when they moved to Bedford (now Marshall) County, Tennessee. He served in the war of 1812. John apparently lost touch with his family in South Carolina, as one of his great nephews, Judge Frank Lightfoot Little, tells of a man coming to South Carolina in 1858 to sell mules and saying to his grandfather, Jacob Little, he knew a man in Tennessee who must be a relative because 'you walk and talk and look just like him.' Judge Little visited his great uncle in Tennessee later that year."
