About John Massey

"About 1667, the comings and goings of the seamen and merchants, meant that some means of entertainment was needed.  There were several taverns in Salem.  John Massey succeeded to the Old Ferry Tavern at the landing of the Cape Ann Side Ferry.  The tavern was built in 1661, two stories in height, the second projecti it on the north and descending nearly to ground, its low windows fitted with diamond-shaped lead sashes.

On March 8, 1685, John Massey petitioned the town of Salem to keep the Ferry to the town of Beverly, across the North River.  The petition was granted and Mr. Massey built a small house on what is now the Salem to Beverly Bridge.  For twenty years, Mr. Massey and his son John kept the ferry and a small inn for travelers on the Ferry." (Essex Antiquarian 8: 159)

Notes:  The Ferry was owned by the town of Salem, and leased to John Massey. The earnings of the Ferry were used to finance the school teacher's salary.  In 1708, the Town of Salem granted a lease for 20 years to John Jr. and a neighbor Roger Haskins to operate the Ferry and Tavern.  After John Sr.'s death in 1711, John Jr. passed his share of the lease on to his brother Nathaniel.  There was a lot of pressure from the townspeople to build a bridge to Beverly, and dispense with the Ferry.  Finally, the construction of the bridge to Beverly was approved.  The bridge now stands where John Massey's property was located.
